Even after leaving college football, NFL players like Aidan Hutchinson still hold on to the intensity of their college rivalries. The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry, which dates back to 1897, is one of the most storied in college football, with Michigan holding a slight edge in the all-time series at 62-51-6.
Following Ohio State’s victory in the College Football Playoff National Championship, Hutchinson, a former Michigan standout and current Detroit Lions EDGE, made it clear that he has no love for the Buckeyes. Despite being years removed from college football, his allegiance to Michigan remains strong.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Hutchinson, who was limited to just five games in 2024 after fracturing his tibia and fibula, was asked about the back-to-back national championships won by Big Ten teams, with Ohio State claiming one and Michigan the other.
Hutchinson responded with hesitation, saying, “You know, I’ve never been a big Big Ten guy, though,” suggesting that it was difficult for him to celebrate a Big Ten national championship that didn’t involve Michigan. His response hinted that, while he could support Michigan’s success, he wasn’t exactly thrilled about Ohio State’s triumph.
As he trailed off, McAfee interjected, asking what Hutchinson would feel if a team like Iowa won a national championship. Hutchinson quickly responded that he would indeed be proud of Iowa but expressed little enthusiasm for teams like Penn State, Michigan State, or Ohio State winning.
The conversation highlighted Hutchinson’s unfiltered allegiance to Michigan and the rivalry with Ohio State, despite both teams representing the Big Ten. Hutchinson, who played for Michigan from 2018 to 2021, has had a history of intense games with Ohio State, holding a 1-2 record against them during his college career.
Notably, the two teams did not face off in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions that shortened the college football season. Despite his less-than-ideal record against the Buckeyes, Hutchinson’s Michigan pride remains unwavering.
Selected as the No. 2 overall pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2022 NFL Draft, Hutchinson’s connection to Michigan continues to be a significant part of his identity. His subtle jab at Ohio State during the show served as a reminder of the fierce rivalry that has always defined college football in the Big Ten.
