The Detroit Lions are expected to be active in shaping their roster during the offseason, and one position they may target is linebacker. With a number of big-name players being linked to the Lions in trade rumors, such as Myles Garrett, Cooper Kupp, and Maxx Crosby, Detroit will have several options to bolster their roster. These high-profile trade targets are just the beginning, as there are also notable free agents the team could pursue to improve their defensive unit.

One player that has emerged as a potential free agent target for the Lions is San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. In an article discussing the top landing spots for the best linebackers in this year’s free agent class, Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron highlighted the Lions as a prime destination for Greenlaw. Over his six-year career, Greenlaw has demonstrated consistent production, making him an appealing option for teams in need of linebacker help.

Greenlaw’s career started strong, racking up 92 tackles as a rookie. The following year, he added 86 tackles in just 13 games. However, his third season was marred by injury, causing him to miss significant time. Nevertheless, Greenlaw bounced back in his fourth year with an impressive 127 tackles, earning a two-year contract worth $16.4 million.

The linebacker continued his success in the first year of his new contract, making 120 tackles and recording five tackles for loss. However, his season ended on a sour note with a torn Achilles suffered in the Super Bowl. As a result, Greenlaw spent much of the 2024 season recovering from the injury, leading to some uncertainty regarding his future performance.

While the injury raises questions for potential suitors, it could also present an opportunity for teams to acquire Greenlaw at a discounted price. Teams willing to take a chance on him returning to his previous form may find value in signing the linebacker. The Lions could be one such team interested in rolling the dice on Greenlaw’s recovery.

The Lions may find themselves in need of a linebacker this offseason, especially with Derrick Barnes set to become a free agent. If Barnes departs, Greenlaw could serve as a solid replacement to join a linebacker corps that struggled with injuries throughout the previous season. Detroit’s defense, which struggled to stop the run, would benefit from an upgrade at the linebacker position.

In addition to Greenlaw’s experience, he brings leadership to the table, having played in two Super Bowls during his first six seasons in the league. This level of big-game experience could prove valuable as the Lions look to build a more competitive defense moving forward. Greenlaw’s familiarity with high-pressure situations would add a level of toughness and resiliency to Detroit’s defensive unit.

The combination of Greenlaw’s skill set and the potential for him to be available at a lower cost due to his injury could make him a smart addition for the Lions. With a linebacker spot likely open on the roster, Detroit may find themselves in the mix for the 49ers star, looking to strengthen their defense in preparation for the upcoming season.
