Notre Dame’s running backs coach, Deland McCullough, is set to leave the program to take on the same role with the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, as reported by multiple sources. McCullough joined the Fighting Irish in 2022 when Marcus Freeman assumed the head coaching position. In 2023, he earned a promotion to run-game coordinator.

McCullough’s Impact on Notre Dame’s Ground Game

Under McCullough’s guidance, Notre Dame’s rushing attack flourished. In 2023, Audric Estime rushed for 1,341 yards and scored 18 touchdowns before being drafted by the Denver Broncos. Following Estime’s departure, Jeremiyah Love stepped into the spotlight. One of the most dynamic runners in college football, Love accumulated 1,125 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns in 2024, positioning himself as a likely Heisman Trophy candidate for the upcoming season.

Beyond its star players, Notre Dame’s running back unit showcased considerable depth. Jadarian Price, a versatile and quick runner, tallied 1,018 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns over the last two seasons, demonstrating NFL potential.

A Return to the NFL for McCullough

McCullough’s transition to the Raiders marks his return to the professional ranks. A former Super Bowl-winning assistant, he previously served as the Kansas City Chiefs’ running backs coach from 2018 to 2020. His move to Las Vegas comes after Pete Carroll’s hiring as head coach in January. Interestingly, McCullough’s father, Sherman Smith, was Carroll’s running backs coach with the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2017, adding a personal connection to the move.

The Raiders have been actively assembling their coaching staff, recently bringing in Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator. Kelly, who played a key role in Ohio State’s national championship victory over Notre Dame last month, now joins McCullough in shaping the Raiders’ offense.

Coaching Turnover at Notre Dame

McCullough’s departure adds to a growing list of high-profile exits from Notre Dame’s coaching staff. Shortly after Notre Dame’s loss to Ohio State in the national championship game, defensive coordinator Al Golden announced his return to the NFL, where he now serves as the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive coordinator. Chris Ash has been brought in as his replacement. Additionally, Chad Bowden stepped down from his role as general manager to take on the same position at USC.

With these coaching vacancies, Marcus Freeman faces a busy offseason. However, Notre Dame boasts a strong roster heading into the 2025 season, particularly in the backfield. With Love and Price leading the charge, the Fighting Irish’s ground game remains a major asset in their pursuit of a national championship.
