With NFL free agency just a month away, several teams, including the Detroit Lions, are preparing for potential roster changes. The Lions, in particular, could see some of their key players explore opportunities elsewhere. Among those who might depart are cornerback Carlton Davis, guard Kevin Zeitler, and defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike.
According to Nick Villano of FanSided, one of the biggest names expected to leave Detroit is Carlton Davis, with the Tennessee Titans projected as his likely landing spot.
Why Carlton Davis Could Be Headed to Tennessee
Villano suggests that the Lions seem content with moving on from Davis, largely due to the presence of young defensive backs Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Detroit is likely to seek a cheaper alternative in free agency rather than invest heavily in keeping Davis.
On the other hand, Tennessee appears willing to pay a premium for a proven veteran like Davis. Villano points out that the Titans see Davis as a valuable piece in their rebuild, noting that his Super Bowl experience could help mentor a young roster. While some teams may hesitate due to Davis’ injury history, the Titans are expected to overlook those concerns to strengthen their secondary. If Davis joins L’Jarius Sneed in Tennessee, the team would solidify one of its most critical defensive positions.
Davis’ 2024 Performance and Career Highlights
Davis had a productive 2024 season, recording 56 tackles, two interceptions, and 11 pass deflections. He earned a 74.5 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking 29th out of 223 qualified cornerbacks.
Originally acquired by Detroit via trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last offseason, Davis spent six seasons in Tampa Bay before joining the Lions. Over his seven-year career, he has accumulated 380 tackles, 11 interceptions, and 84 pass deflections, along with a Super Bowl ring—a credential that could make him especially valuable to a rebuilding Titans team.
How the Lions Could Replace Davis
If Davis departs, the Lions will likely lean on their 2024 draft selections, Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr., to step up. Amik Robertson could also play a leadership role in the cornerback group. While Arnold showed promise, his performances were inconsistent, and Rakestraw was limited to just eight games due to injury.
Detroit has other options as well, with $46 million in projected cap space. Potential free-agent replacements include veterans D.J. Reed, Rasul Douglas, and Donte Jackson. If Davis signs elsewhere, the Lions could pursue one of these experienced corners to bolster their secondary.
