The Detroit Lions entered the 2024 season with aspirations of finally reaching the Super Bowl, but their journey ended in disappointment with a divisional-round loss to the Washington Commanders.
Now, the team is positioned to bolster its roster in the upcoming offseason. With approximately $45 million in salary cap space, per Over the Cap, Detroit has the flexibility to make key acquisitions in free agency.
One major concern is the edge rusher position. While Aidan Hutchinson led the team in sacks before suffering a season-ending injury in early October, depth remains a pressing issue. Marcus Davenport missed nearly the entire season and is set to hit free agency, making his return unlikely. Additionally, Za’Darius Smith, at 32, has just one year remaining on his contract.
Khalil Mack: A Prime Target for Detroit
Sportsnaut’s Matt Johnson recently outlined ideal free agent signings for each NFL team. For the Lions, he suggested Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack as a potential addition.
Johnson emphasized Mack’s desire to compete for a championship and how he thrives alongside another elite pass rusher. Pairing him with Hutchinson could significantly enhance Detroit’s defensive front. In 2024, Mack posted an impressive 90.4 Pro Football Focus grade, excelling in both run defense and pass rushing.
Despite turning 34 before free agency, Mack remains highly productive. He recorded 39 tackles, six sacks, six tackles for loss, and 15 quarterback hits last season, earning his ninth career Pro Bowl selection.
Financial Considerations and Potential Fit
Mack is projected to command a three-year contract worth $23.6 million per season, according to Spotrac. However, given his lack of postseason success, he might be willing to take a discounted deal for a chance to compete for a title.
A partnership with Hutchinson could create one of the NFL’s most dominant pass-rushing duos. Mack’s career-high 17 sacks in 2023—playing alongside Joey Bosa—demonstrate how effective he can be when paired with another elite rusher. If Detroit secures Mack, their defense could take a major step toward Super Bowl contention in 2025.
