John Morton, the new offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, has emphasized that the team’s offensive strategy will still revolve around quarterback Jared Goff, similar to the approach under former coordinator Ben Johnson. Morton, who was part of the Lions’ coaching staff in 2022, was selected in part due to his familiarity with Goff and the offense. This continuity was a key factor for head coach Dan Campbell, who sought to maintain the strong relationship between Goff and the offensive coordinator.
Although some worry about potential changes affecting Goff’s performance, Morton reassured that he intends to maintain the successful structure that has worked in recent seasons. In an interview with Dan Miller from Fox2, Morton expressed that his previous time with the Lions, particularly in the quarterback room, gives him insight into Goff’s preferences and what works best for him. He plans to build on this foundation and further tailor the offense to Goff’s strengths.
Morton acknowledged that while the Lions’ offensive philosophy is already in place, his role will be to carry on that vision while making small adjustments where necessary. He is fully aware of the great situation he’s stepping into as the new coordinator of the NFL’s top-scoring offense and intends to continue evolving the offense in a way that aligns with head coach Campbell’s vision.
