“…..we defeated a team that had Bregman on its roster”

The Detroit Tigers made an aggressive attempt to sign free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman but ultimately fell short. Despite this, team president Scott Harris remains unfazed by the outcome.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Harris confirmed that the Tigers presented Bregman with a strong offer. However, he acknowledged the inherent risk in free agency and emphasized that the organization prioritizes players who genuinely want to be in Detroit. Harris reinforced his confidence in the team, stating:

“We’re going to be just fine without Alex Bregman. This is a clubhouse that just reached the postseason and defeated a team that had Bregman on its roster, so we know it’s possible.”

Detroit eliminated the Houston Astros in last year’s AL Wild Card round, sweeping the series with two road victories. Bregman went 3-for-8 in those games, but the Tigers still came out on top.

Reports suggest Detroit put forward a highly competitive offer, possibly the most appealing for Bregman in terms of long-term security. However, Boston’s proposal, while shorter in length, included a higher annual salary, ultimately persuading him to sign with the Red Sox.

While the Tigers bolstered their pitching staff earlier in the offseason, their only major addition to the lineup has been infielder Gleyber Torres. Despite this, the organization remains confident in its ability to return to the playoffs—even without Bregman in the mix.
