The Detroit Lions might face a significant change in their offensive line this offseason, as veteran right guard Kevin Zeitler is set to hit free agency.

Zeitler, who joined Detroit on a one-year contract last season, played a crucial role in the team’s success. However, with him turning 35 next season, the Lions may opt to inject youth into their offensive front.

In his latest NFL Network mock draft, analyst Daniel Jeremiah projects Ohio State’s Donovan Jackson as Detroit’s pick at No. 28 overall. Jackson, a standout for the 2024 national champion Buckeyes, was named a First-Team All-American.

“Jackson would be an ideal replacement for Kevin Zeitler if the veteran moves on in free agency,” Jeremiah noted.

If Zeitler departs, the Lions could find themselves in need of reinforcements at guard. Graham Glasgow, who played at left guard, had an underwhelming 2024 campaign after signing a three-year deal. If he doesn’t regain his form and Zeitler exits, Detroit’s offensive line depth could be tested.

Despite these concerns, the Lions boast one of the NFL’s strongest offensive fronts. Taylor Decker and two-time All-Pro Penei Sewell provide stability at tackle, while Frank Ragnow is among the league’s most reliable centers.

Detroit does have some younger players who could step up in 2025. One name to watch is Christian Mahogany, a sixth-round pick in 2024, who impressed in his two starts. He notably filled in for an injured Zeitler during the divisional-round playoff win over Washington. Other potential contributors include Colby Sorsdal and Gio Manu, both of whom remain under contract.

Jackson, originally a five-star recruit from Texas, earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors three times and was a key figure in Ohio State’s title-winning season.

According to Pro Football Focus, he posted a 71.8 overall offensive grade and a 70.2 run-blocking grade in 2024. In pass protection, he allowed 19 pressures and two sacks throughout the season.

Late in the year, injuries forced Jackson to shift from guard to tackle, where he held his own despite the position change—further showcasing his versatility.
