While appearing on the Slightly Decent podcast, Davis spoke highly of Lions head coach Dan Campbell, recalling a significant moment following Detroit’s Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A costly clock management mistake led to a 10-second runoff, denying the Lions a chance at a field goal. Despite the misstep, Campbell accepted full responsibility, a move that left a lasting impression on Davis.

“When we got back to the locker room, he was in tears. He kept saying, ‘Blame your coach. This is on me.’ He fully owned the mistake,” Davis said.
“In all my years of playing football—over 20 now—I’ve never had a coach step up like that and admit, ‘I cost us the game.’ And honestly, there were plenty of other plays we could’ve made, but he took it all on himself.”
Campbell later echoed the same sentiment in his post-game comments, stating, “Their head coach let them down this week.”
Davis on Campbell’s Unique Coaching Style
Beyond accountability, Davis praised Campbell for his personal approach to coaching, noting that he consistently acknowledges and motivates his players.
“Dan makes an effort to talk to you nearly every day—whether at practice or just walking through the locker room,” Davis shared.
“He’ll tell you after a game, ‘Man, you’re more than just a cover corner—you’re physical too!’ And he’ll say it in front of everyone. That’s the first time a coach has ever done that for me.”
Davis also admired how Campbell recognizes the little things that often go unnoticed, such as wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown’s contributions as a blocker.

“He’s as real as they come,” Davis said. “Out of all the coaches I’ve played for, he’s my favorite, hands down.”
“I was willing to put everything on the line for him.”
Davis, who has played under respected coaches like Todd Bowles, Bruce Arians, and Gus Malzahn, emphasized that none of them compare to Campbell’s leadership.
