Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is making headlines early in the NFL offseason, as the Los Angeles Rams have given him and his agent permission to explore trade options.
After three strong seasons with the Rams—including leading them to a Super Bowl victory in 2022—Stafford, now 37, may be considering a fresh start. With the Rams also preparing to move star wide receiver Cooper Kupp, Stafford might see this as the perfect time to explore his options.
Multiple Teams Eyeing Stafford, Per NFL Insider
NFL analyst Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that at least four teams have expressed serious interest in acquiring Stafford.
He believes that while repairing the relationship between Stafford and the Rams is possible, the veteran quarterback is fully aware of his value on the open market, making a trade increasingly likely.
Breer specifically identifies the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Las Vegas Raiders as teams pursuing Stafford. However, he also suggests that other franchises have quietly shown interest in the veteran signal-caller.
The financial aspect of the deal remains a major factor. Breer highlights that Stafford belongs among the NFL’s top-paid quarterbacks, where contracts now exceed $50 million annually.
A key question remains: What would the Rams require in return? If they insist on a first-round pick, will interested teams still be willing to commit to such a high salary?
Stafford Set for a Major Payday
While many details remain uncertain, one thing is clear—Stafford is in line for a significant contract. Though he reworked his deal with the Rams last season, Breer describes it as a temporary fix, noting that Stafford is unlikely to continue playing at a reduced rate moving forward.
For the Giants, acquiring Stafford would come with both advantages and drawbacks, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. He points out that while Stafford isn’t a long-term solution, he fits owner John Mara’s desire for immediate competitiveness.
Additionally, bringing in a proven quarterback could relieve pressure on general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, both of whom are under pressure to deliver results this season.
With Stafford drawing strong interest and the quarterback market booming, all signs point to him securing a lucrative deal—whether with the Rams or a new team.
