The Detroit Lions have reportedly agreed to bring back linebacker Anthony Pittman on a one-year deal, continuing to strengthen their linebacker corps ahead of free agency. This move follows the Lions’ earlier decision to re-sign linebacker Derrick Barnes to a three-year extension. Though the full terms of Pittman’s deal have not been disclosed, ESPN confirmed the agreement, and Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press added that while the deal is not officially finalized, it’s expected to happen soon. Pittman, a Detroit native, was a restricted free agent, but this new contract does not appear to involve an RFA tender.

Pittman’s return to Detroit comes after a somewhat circuitous journey. After starting his career with the Lions in 2019, he briefly joined the Washington Commanders in free agency last year, hoping to secure a spot on their defense. However, after being waived at final cuts, Pittman landed on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad. In December, he was brought back by the Lions, where he expressed his excitement about rejoining the team.

Known primarily for his special teams contributions, Pittman has played over 350 special teams snaps in each of the last three seasons (2021-2023). Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp spoke highly of Pittman’s growth, noting that he went from being on the practice squad to becoming a key special teams player. Fipp also praised Pittman for taking a risk by trying to earn a regular spot with Washington, even though it ultimately didn’t work out, and commended his resilience in returning to the Lions.

With the re-signing of Pittman, the Lions now have seven linebackers under contract for the 2025 season: Alex Anzalone, Jack Campbell, Malcolm Rodriguez, Derrick Barnes, Anthony Pittman, Abraham Beauplan, and DaRon Gilbert.
