The Detroit Lions have already experienced a significant loss this offseason with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson departing for a head coaching role within their division. Now, two of their key players might be next.
Potential Departures to the Chicago Bears
Johnson, now at the helm of the Chicago Bears, could be eyeing two Lions linemen as free agency approaches, according to Jared Ramsey of the Detroit Free Press. Given Chicago’s need for reinforcements along the trenches, defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike stands out as a strong candidate.
The Bears struggled against the run last season and could use another force alongside defensive end Montez Sweat. Ramsey noted that Onwuzurike, who remained healthy throughout the season while shifting between defensive tackle and end, is among the top available interior defenders in free agency. He is projected to command around $8 million per year, per Over The Cap.
Another potential target for the Bears is Dan Skipper, a versatile lineman who has played a key role in Detroit’s offensive sets. Often utilized as an extra blocker in running formations and even as a surprise receiving option, Skipper has been a fan favorite in Detroit. Ramsey pointed out that even with recent trade acquisitions, Chicago still needs depth along the offensive line. Skipper, who served as a backup to Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker, could be an attractive option.
Detroit’s Own Needs in the Trenches
Despite a well-structured roster, the Lions do have some pressing needs, particularly along the defensive front. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press highlighted that Onwuzurike’s potential departure, coupled with season-ending injuries to Alim McNeill and Mekhi Wingo, leaves Detroit with gaps to fill.
Birkett suggested that Detroit may pursue veteran free agents such as Calais Campbell from Miami or Sebastian Joseph-Day from Tennessee. Additionally, the Lions could invest a high draft pick to bolster their defensive line.
“The Lions won’t stand pat,” Birkett wrote. “They must bring in at least one starting-caliber interior defender through free agency or the draft. With a strong draft class at the position and several capable veterans on the market, they have options. Onwuzurike could still return, but at the very least, they need to add depth with budget-friendly veterans like restricted free agent Pat O’Connor.”
