ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the San Francisco 49ers have cut veteran edge rusher Leonard Floyd—Lions urged to Quickly sign him.

As anticipated, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that the 49ers are parting ways with defensive end Leonard Floyd.

After signing a two-year contract last offseason, Floyd spent just one year with San Francisco. While his performance didn’t earn high marks from Pro Football Focus—ranking 102nd among edge rushers—his production tells a different story. He recorded 8.5 sacks, ranking second on the team behind Nick Bosa, while also contributing 44 pressures and eight tackles for loss. His streak of four straight seasons with at least nine sacks came to an end, but he has maintained remarkable durability, not missing a game since 2017.

Over the past five seasons (2020-2024), only six players have recorded more sacks than Floyd’s 48—T.J. Watt, Trey Hendrickson, Myles Garrett, Nick Bosa, Haason Reddick, and Micah Parsons.

Lions Should Strongly Consider Floyd as a Pass Rush Addition

At 240 pounds, Floyd doesn’t perfectly fit the physical mold Detroit typically prefers for its edge rushers. However, he is effective against the run (despite what PFF ratings suggest) and, unlike recent Lions signee Marcus Davenport, has a strong track record of staying healthy. As he approaches his 33rd birthday at the start of the season, Floyd may be best suited for a rotational role, but his experience and productivity make him a valuable asset for any defensive front.

Despite some concern over the Lions’ slow approach in free agency, the team still has plenty of options. Floyd should be near the top of their list as they look to strengthen their pass rush.
