Carlton Davis III Explains His Decision to Join the New England Patriots Over the Detroit Lions
In his first press conference with the New England Patriots, cornerback Carlton Davis, who recently left the Detroit Lions to sign a three-year, $60 million deal, shared his reasoning behind the move. Davis, now reunited with former Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams in New England, discussed how this new chapter in his career was the right fit for him.
A Fresh Start
“I wanted to be seen as a priority,” Davis said when explaining why he chose the Patriots. “I saw an opportunity here to be part of something special in such a storied organization.” He also mentioned his admiration for head coach Mike Vrabel, having followed his work in Tennessee. Davis valued the chance to work with Williams again and recognized the talent around him, which made the Patriots’ offer particularly appealing. “It’s about being in a place where I can build something from the ground up.”
Reflecting on His Time in Detroit
Davis was quick to express his gratitude for his time in Detroit. “I had a great experience there,” he noted. “My season with them was really rewarding, and I had a lot of fun playing with my teammates. I’ll always cherish that part of my career.” Despite his success with the Lions, he felt it was time for a new challenge where he could step into a leadership role and contribute to building something even bigger.
A New Challenge in New England
“My decision was about finding a place where I could make a real impact, where I could come in and lead,” Davis said. “In this league, time is limited, and you have to make every opportunity count.” While he acknowledged the Lions’ promising future, he felt that the chance to be part of a new defense in New England was the right move. “Detroit has something great going, but New England offers something different. It’s about being part of something where you can help shape the future.”
Davis’ departure from Detroit marks the end of his brief tenure with the Lions but also the start of an exciting new journey with the Patriots, where he aims to make a significant contribution to their defense.
