As one of the NFL’s top contenders heading into the next season, the Detroit Lions have still had to make some tough roster choices this offseason. Among them was the release of linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, a key contributor on special teams.
Reeves-Maybin spent the majority of his career with the Lions, playing seven of his eight seasons in Detroit. His efforts earned him both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in 2023. However, following a less productive season, the team opted to part ways with the veteran, moving on from the two-year, $7.5 million contract he signed last year. One Lions leader has already expressed his disappointment over the decision.
Alex Anzalone Reacts to Reeves-Maybin’s Departure
Linebacker Alex Anzalone took to social media to share his emotions, responding to the Lions’ announcement with a broken heart and a sad emoji. His reaction highlights how much Reeves-Maybin meant to the team.
Though Anzalone remains a key figure in Detroit’s defense and is unlikely to request a trade, his post reflects the strong bond Reeves-Maybin had built with his teammates.
A fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Reeves-Maybin had his best season in 2021, starting 11 games and recording 82 tackles, four tackles for loss, four pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. His impressive play led him to sign a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Houston Texans, but his stint there lasted only one season before he was let go.
Returning to Detroit turned out to be a blessing, as Reeves-Maybin made an impact on special teams, tallying 20 tackles, one sack, and a tackle for loss in 17 games. His efforts earned him a Pro Bowl nod and All-Pro recognition, which led to another contract with the Lions. Unfortunately, a midseason neck injury last year limited him to just 10 games, which contributed to the team’s decision to release him.
By cutting ties with Reeves-Maybin, the Lions freed up $2 million in cap space. However, for a squad that has built strong chemistry over the last two years, losing a valued teammate like him is a tough pill to swallow for those returning next season.
