With veteran guard Kevin Zeitler now with the Tennessee Titans, the Detroit Lions must find a reliable replacement to maintain their offensive line’s strength. General manager Brad Holmes faces the challenge of filling this void for the second consecutive offseason.

A Veteran Option on the Table

While Detroit has the option of developing young talent like Christian Mahogany or selecting a guard in the draft, bringing in an experienced player could be the best approach. Christian D’Andrea of For the Win suggests that the Lions are a strong contender to sign free-agent guard Brandon Scherff, formerly with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Kevin Zeitler’s departure leaves a significant opening. While Christian Mahogany has the potential to become a homegrown star, adding a seasoned veteran—just as Detroit did with Zeitler—could be a smart move. Plus, Scherff has spent his career with teams like the Dan Snyder-era Washington Commanders and Jacksonville Jaguars. He deserves a fresh start,” D’Andrea noted.

Why Scherff Would Be a Great Fit

Bringing in Scherff would provide immediate stability at right guard. Even at 33 years old, he remains highly effective, having started every game over the past three seasons in Jacksonville. Notably, in 2024, he did not allow a single sack, demonstrating his consistency and reliability.

If the Lions can secure Scherff on a short-term, team-friendly contract, it would be a wise investment to strengthen their offensive line.
