Detroit Lions offensive tackle Kayode Awosika tied the knot with Bernadette Osborne on March 2 in Miami, marking the occasion with both a traditional Nigerian ceremony and a classic American wedding. Their celebration spanned an entire weekend, beginning with a welcome event, continuing with a heartfelt wedding, and concluding with a farewell brunch.

A Weekend to Remember

The couple envisioned a gathering where loved ones could not only celebrate their union but also enjoy a mini-vacation. Their wedding festivities kicked off with a welcome party on March 1 at Hotel Colonnade Coral Gables, Autograph Collection. The following day, they honored Awosika’s heritage with a Nigerian ceremony rich in cultural traditions, including blessings, prayers, and symbolic dances.

For their official wedding, the couple exchanged vows in the lush gardens of Villa Toscana Miami, beneath an elegant Italian-style cupola adorned with a chandelier. Before the main ceremony, they privately read personalized vows to each other. Sean Pugh, the Detroit Lions’ team chaplain and director of player engagement, officiated the wedding.

A Meaningful Union

Reflecting on their commitment, Awosika expressed the significance of marriage, describing it as the conscious decision to unite with someone for life. “Choosing a partner is one of the most important decisions you can make because they become part of your family by choice,” he shared.

The guest list included 135 attendees, among them several NFL players, such as Jordan Mailata (Philadelphia Eagles), Isaac Seumalo (Pittsburgh Steelers), and teammates from the Detroit Lions, including Dan Skipper, Colby Sorsdal, and Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Other notable guests included Kenny Yeboah (New York Jets), James Mitchell (Carolina Panthers), and Matt Pryor (Chicago Bears).

Osborne made a breathtaking entrance in a mermaid-style Enzoani gown, accompanied by a cathedral-length veil, as a violinist played “Here Comes the Bride.” Her look was perfected by hairstylist Zunia with StyledNPretty and makeup artist TheClyque. Awosika complemented her elegance with a cream-colored suit and black dress shoes.

A Reception to Remember

During the reception, the couple changed into second outfits. Osborne donned a handcrafted beaded dress designed by a Nigerian designer, who also created her traditional Nigerian attire. Awosika opted for a more relaxed ensemble featuring a white dress shirt and black pants. They both sported matching white Nike Air Force 1 sneakers.

Their first dance was to James Arthur’s “Say You Won’t Let Go,” followed by a surprise performance from Awosika, who serenaded his bride with “Sweet Love” by Myles Smith.

Ensuring that their guests enjoyed the night, the couple focused on great food and entertainment. The menu featured an assortment of dishes, from pizza and gourmet macaroni and cheese to bacon-wrapped plantains, coconut shrimp, and cheesecake shooters. Late-night snacks included cheeseburger sliders, fries, and strawberry milkshakes. The four-tiered wedding cake boasted flavors such as champagne, Belgian chocolate, and coconut.

A Love Story That Began in College

Awosika and Osborne’s journey began when he messaged her during their college years, simply saying, “Hey, what’s up? :).” Their bond deepened over the years, culminating in a proposal on Osborne’s birthday, June 23, 2023.

Expressing admiration for his new wife, Awosika praised her dedication and selflessness. “She holds herself to a high standard, ensuring that everyone around her is cared for,” he said. Osborne, in turn, shared her excitement about having a lifelong partner, describing Awosika as her best friend and biggest supporter.

Following their wedding, the couple set off for their honeymoon at La Casa de la Playa in Mexico. Osborne, having recently earned her physician assistant license, is preparing to begin her career in urgent care, while Awosika is using the NFL offseason to train for the upcoming season.

“We’re excited to continue growing together and supporting each other through life’s highs and lows,” Osborne shared, with Awosika adding that he looks forward to having someone by his side who truly wants the best for him.
