Kentucky basketball fans are already looking ahead to the 2025-26 season and wondering which underclassmen will step up for the Wildcats. With four returning underclassmen, the big question is: who will have a breakout year? The candidates are Garrison, Chandler, Noah, and Perry. Let’s break them down.
If you’re placing bets on breakout potential, Chandler might be your safest pick. The 6-4 guard from Utah had a slow start due to injury but showed some promising flashes when he returned. While his stats weren’t impressive, his scoring ability, defensive skills, and poise suggest that with more playing time, his confidence and performance will improve. With potential backcourt turnover and Mark Pope valuing combo guards, Chandler could earn 20+ minutes a game next season.
Trent Noah, a former Harlan County standout, is another underclassman who could have an impact. His stats don’t tell the full story — he made key contributions in big moments, especially in Kentucky’s wins over Tennessee. Noah is a scrappy player who can make plays on both ends of the floor. The challenge for him is adapting to a more physical role in the frontcourt, as Pope wants him to bulk up and potentially play as a stretch forward. If Noah adjusts well, he could earn consistent playing time.
Perry, Kentucky’s all-time leading scorer, didn’t get much opportunity as a freshman, partly due to a late-season injury. While his shooting touch and finishing ability weren’t quite there last season, he’s known for his scoring instincts and work ethic. However, with a crowded backcourt expected next year, Perry may find it hard to carve out significant minutes. His potential is undeniable, but getting on the floor could be a challenge.
Then there’s Garrison, the wild card. A former McDonald’s All-American, he has the size (6-11), athleticism, and court vision to make a big impact. However, his inconsistency and lack of motor have held him back. With Pope’s player-friendly system and another year of development, Garrison has the potential to become a major contributor, but his future could be influenced by the transfer portal.
The transfer portal remains a looming factor, as it’s possible that any of these players may not be on the roster next season. While they might all stay, nothing is certain until the portal officially closes.
