Lions Projected to Trade Up for Dynamic Receiver Tetairoa McMllan

The Detroit Lions continue to build one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses, and they may not be finished adding firepower. Already boasting stars like Amon-Ra St. Brown, running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, and the speedy Jameson Williams, Detroit could be looking to further boost their receiving corps in the upcoming NFL Draft.

According to a recent prediction, the Lions are expected to move up in the first round by trading with the Los Angeles Chargers to secure the No. 22 overall pick. The target? Arizona standout wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan.

Analyst Sharma believes this bold move would add another explosive playmaker to Detroit’s offense. McMillan turned heads during his junior year at Arizona, racking up 84 catches, 1,319 yards, and eight touchdowns in 2024. While there have been concerns about his speed and ability to separate from defenders, Sharma emphasized his knack for making big plays and sees him as a potential impact player at the next level.

“McMillan’s presence alongside St. Brown and Williams would give Jared Goff an incredible trio of weapons,” Sharma noted.

General manager Brad Holmes has a history of making aggressive draft-day trades, but the Lions could also opt to stay at their current No. 28 spot to strengthen other areas, particularly on defense. Many experts think Detroit may focus on giving pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson more help on the edge.

McMillan Could Take Over Key Role in Detroit

If Detroit manages to draft McMillan, he may eventually take the spot of one of the current receivers on the roster. Jameson Williams, despite his game-breaking speed, has dealt with multiple suspensions and hasn’t signed a long-term contract with the team.

While Williams bounced back with a strong 2024 season—totaling 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven scores—his overall inconsistency and previous injuries make his future in Detroit uncertain. As noted by the Detroit Free Press, the Lions may take a wait-and-see approach before committing to a lucrative extension for Williams.

“For now, there’s no rush to lock Williams into a big contract,” Birkett wrote. “His NFL resume remains a bit unsteady, and it’s smart for the Lions to be cautious.”

With McMillan in the mix, Detroit’s receiving unit could become one of the most dangerous in the league, giving Goff yet another talented option and providing insurance should Williams falter.
