Jameson Williams finally delivered on his promise in 2024. After two quiet seasons with Detroit, where he totaled only 25 catches for 395 yards and three scores, the third-year wideout erupted for 1,001 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. His big-play ability started to shine through, giving the Lions hope that he could become a long-term weapon in their offense.
However, not everyone sees Williams staying in Detroit forever. Mike Payton of AtoZ Sports speculates that the Lions could consider dealing him, especially if they invest an early pick in a wide receiver in the 2025 draft. While it’s likely Detroit will pick up his fifth-year option, there’s still a scenario where he becomes a trade chip.
If that happens, the Los Angeles Chargers could be one of the first teams in line. Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports views the Chargers as a top potential destination. Despite making a strong playoff push last season, Los Angeles struggled with an underwhelming group of pass-catchers. Ladd McConkey, a 2024 rookie, emerged as their most dependable receiver, while the return of veteran Mike Williams hasn’t added much, as age and injuries have taken their toll.
Palacios suggests that Jameson Williams could step in and offer the kind of spark L.A. desperately needs—especially after DJ Chark failed to make an impact in 2024. With his speed and explosiveness, Williams could become the deep threat that Justin Herbert has been missing.
Of course, trading for Williams isn’t without risk. He’s had some off-field concerns, and a significant contract extension will be on the horizon. But for a team trying to maximize Herbert’s prime years, adding a young, dynamic wideout like Williams could be worth the gamble.
Even so, it’s hard to see Lions GM Brad Holmes giving up on a rising star so soon—especially after the breakout year he just had. Unless Detroit adds another top-tier receiver in the draft, expect Williams to be catching passes in a Lions uniform come 2025
