Lions Meet with Star Running Back Prospect Cam Skattebo Ahead of Draft

Despite boasting one of the NFL’s most productive backfields, the Detroit Lions have shown interest in adding to their running back room. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Detroit recently hosted Arizona State standout Cam Skattebo for a pre-draft visit—one of just two remaining on his schedule.

Skattebo was sensational in 2024, rushing for 1,711 yards and scoring 21 touchdowns, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He was a dual threat as well, recording 45 receptions for 605 yards. His toughness and versatility helped him secure a fifth-place finish in the Heisman Trophy race.

However, with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs leading the charge in Detroit’s offense, Skattebo’s fit with the Lions is questionable. Montgomery remains the go-to short-yardage bruiser, while Gibbs offers explosive playmaking and elite pass-catching ability out of the backfield. Together, they racked up 2,187 rushing yards last season—an improvement on their already-impressive 2023 total of 1,960 yards.

Given the current depth chart, drafting another featured back like Skattebo may not be necessary. If Detroit selects a running back in the 2025 NFL Draft, it will likely be in the later rounds to add depth rather than to change the rotation. While Skattebo has the tools for a strong pro career, he’ll probably find his opportunity with a different franchise.
