The Detroit Lions have locked in the return of offensive lineman Michael Niese, officially finalizing his contract as offseason activities get underway.
Niese had been an exclusive-rights free agent, and while reports suggested the team extended him a tender in recent weeks, the agreement was formally signed on Tuesday with players now back in the building for workouts.
At 27 years old, Niese played in all of Detroit’s games last season, contributing on special teams (96 snaps) and in limited offensive action (35 snaps). He has been part of the Lions’ roster for two seasons following previous stops with the Broncos, Bears, and Buccaneers. Originally undrafted in 2021, he entered the league out of Temple after transferring from Dayton.
Niese adds valuable depth along the interior offensive line, capable of playing both guard and center. His familiarity with the coaching staff and teammates made his return a straightforward decision for the team. Still, Detroit continues to look for reinforcements inside, particularly with the NFL Draft around the corner.
The Lions lost veteran guard Kevin Zeitler to the Titans during free agency. While Graham Glasgow and Christian Mahogany currently headline the competition at guard, Niese joins Kayode Awosika and potentially newcomer Giovanni Manu in the battle for spots.
General manager Brad Holmes emphasized earlier this month that the team isn’t done evaluating options.
“We want to make sure there’s plenty of competition at the position,” Holmes said. “We brought Yode back, and we’re still looking into adding a veteran presence. And of course, the draft remains an option.”
Holmes added, “Whether it’s a late-round steal like Mahogany or someone we spot earlier, we’re keeping our eyes open for help on the interior.”
