**Tennessee’s Josh Heupel Shows Confidence in Joey Aguilar After Nico Iamaleava Saga**
In the wake of a turbulent offseason marked by the unexpected departure of star quarterback Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel has turned the page—and placed his trust in Appalachian State transfer Joey Aguilar as the new leader of the Volunteers’ offense.
Iamaleava, the former five-star recruit and presumed face of the program, entered the transfer portal in a stunning move that caught much of the college football world off guard. While the reasons behind his exit remain speculative, Tennessee wasted no time in securing a replacement, landing Aguilar in the portal to stabilize the quarterback room.
Now, with spring practices behind them and the summer approaching, Heupel is publicly backing Aguilar as the Vols’ signal-caller moving forward. The 6-foot-3 senior brings experience and production to Knoxville, having thrown for over 3,100 yards and 33 touchdowns last season at App State.
“Joey has come in and handled everything like a pro,” Heupel said during a recent media session. “He’s embraced the system, connected with his teammates, and shown that he’s more than capable of leading this team. We’re excited about what he brings to the table.”
Aguilar’s journey is a classic underdog story. After beginning his college career at the junior college level, he transferred to Appalachian State and quickly earned the starting job, helping the Mountaineers contend in the Sun Belt. His mobility, poise in the pocket, and downfield accuracy made him one of the top Group of Five quarterbacks in 2023.
Tennessee fans may have been shaken by Iamaleava’s departure, but Heupel is confident Aguilar can run his up-tempo, high-powered offense effectively. With a strong supporting cast including a veteran offensive line and playmakers at receiver and running back, the Vols are hoping to stay competitive in a loaded SEC despite the offseason drama.
“Every guy’s journey is different,” Heupel added. “What matters most is how you respond, and Joey has responded like a leader.”
As fall camp approaches, Aguilar is expected to enter as QB1, with freshman Jake Merklinger and redshirt sophomore Navy Shuler backing him up. While questions remain about Tennessee’s long-term quarterback plan, Heupel’s confidence in Aguilar offers a clear signal: the Vols are moving forward.
