NFL’s New Kickoff Rule Sparks Major Change for Lions’ Kicking Unit

The Detroit Lions are making significant adjustments on special teams following a major NFL rule change affecting kickoffs. Starting in the 2025 season, touchbacks on kickoffs will now bring the ball out to the 35-yard line, instead of the previous 25. In response, the Lions have decided to adjust their approach to kickoffs, including a potential shift at the kicker position. The team is reportedly exploring the idea of using a designated kickoff specialist who excels in directional kicking and hang time, rather than simply booming the ball out of the end zone. This strategy will help limit return opportunities and give the Lions’ coverage unit a better chance to pin opposing offenses deep in their own territory.

While Michael Badgley has handled both field goals and kickoffs for the Lions, the new rule may lead the team to split responsibilities. Badgley’s strength lies in his field goal accuracy, but the Lions may now look for a specialist whose skills are better suited to the evolving kickoff landscape.

Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp has emphasized the importance of adapting quickly. “This is going to change how every team views the kickoff,” Fipp said in a recent interview. “We’re going to be more strategic—whether that means directional kicks, squibs, or hang-time focused boots—we want to create returns on our terms.”

The rule is modeled after a similar approach used in the XFL, which successfully reduced injuries while increasing return excitement. NFL teams that adapt quickly to this change could find themselves with a field position edge, especially in close games.

For the Lions, who are aiming to build off their playoff success in 2024, this adjustment could be crucial. Field position is a hidden but critical part of the game, and Detroit’s willingness to make proactive changes shows a team hungry to compete at the highest level.
