As the Detroit Lions prepare for the upcoming NFL season, head coach Dan Campbell is making it clear that wide receiver Jameson Williams is set to take on a much bigger role. Speaking to local media ahead of Friday’s organized team activities (OTAs), Campbell expressed high expectations for the third-year wideout, declaring that the team will “lean on” Williams this year and that “the sky is the limit” for his potential.
Williams, a former first-round pick out of Alabama in 2022, has had a slow start to his NFL career due to injuries and limited opportunities. However, after showing flashes of his elite speed and playmaking ability late last season, the Lions are ready to unleash him in a more prominent role. Campbell noted that Williams has matured both on and off the field, pointing to his improved work ethic and focus during the offseason.
“He’s put in the work, and we’re going to give him opportunities,” Campbell said. “He’s grown a lot. You can see it in the way he’s preparing, how he’s practicing. He wants to be great, and we believe he can be.”
The Lions’ new offensive coordinator, John Morton, shares Campbell’s enthusiasm. Known for his creative passing schemes and vertical threats, Morton is expected to take full advantage of Williams’ elite speed and deep-ball ability. With defenses focusing heavily on star wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown, Williams will likely benefit from more one-on-one matchups and could become a consistent downfield weapon for quarterback Jared Goff.
Detroit’s offense was one of the most explosive in the NFL last season, and with Williams stepping into a more significant role, the unit could become even more dangerous. His ability to stretch the field complements the short-to-intermediate dominance of St. Brown, giving the Lions a more balanced and unpredictable attack.
Campbell made it clear that Williams’ breakout isn’t just a hope—it’s a part of the team’s plan.
“We’re going to count on him,” Campbell said. “This isn’t about waiting anymore. It’s time.”
With the full support of the coaching staff and a new offensive scheme tailored to his strengths, Jameson Williams appears poised for a breakout 2025 season—one that could help push the Lions closer to their Super Bowl aspirations.
