As NFL teams finalize their rosters ahead of training camp, the Detroit Lions remain in a position to make one more impactful addition. With the free agent market thinning out, veteran pass rusher Matthew Judon is one of the few high-profile names still available—and he could be an ideal fit in Detroit.

Judon, 32, spent the 2023 season with the Atlanta Falcons, appearing in all 17 games and continuing to show he can contribute at a high level. Though he’s no longer in his prime, Judon has carved out an impressive career. A four-time Pro Bowler, he has consistently been one of the most disruptive edge defenders in the NFL over the past decade.

What makes Judon appealing to the Lions is not only his track record but also his potential value. At this stage in his career, he likely won’t command a top-dollar contract, making him a cost-effective depth addition to a defensive unit that is looking to take the next step. With rising star Aidan Hutchinson already anchoring the pass rush, Judon could serve as a key rotational piece or a situational weapon on third downs.

Detroit’s defense showed major improvement in 2023, helping the team win its first division title since 1993 and advance to the NFC Championship Game. However, the Lions still lacked consistency in their pass rush outside of Hutchinson. Adding a savvy veteran like Judon would give them more flexibility and depth, something every contending team needs as injuries and attrition take their toll late in the season.

From Judon’s perspective, Detroit offers an appealing opportunity. The Lions are a team on the rise, with a young, talented core and strong coaching staff. Joining a contender could give Judon another shot at a deep playoff run—and potentially the Super Bowl.

Ultimately, the move would be a low-risk, high-reward signing for both sides. The Lions get a proven veteran with playoff experience, and Judon gets a chance to contribute meaningfully on a team poised to make noise in the NFC.

As free agency continues to wind down, don’t be surprised if the Lions make one more smart move—bringing in a battle-tested veteran like Matthew Judon to help complete their championship-caliber roster.
