For many, the image of a college cheerleader conjures up smiles, energy, and game-day glamour—but for Kelly Stafford, the reality behind the pom-poms was far more complicated.

During a revealing episode of her podcast The Morning After, released on June 19, Kelly—wife of NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford—peeled back the layers of her cheerleading past at the University of Georgia to expose the emotional toll it took on her self-image. She recounted that, despite being physically fit and young, her cheerleading coach’s harsh criticism made her feel grossly inadequate.

“I remember feeling like I weighed a ton,” she said. “My coach would look at me like I was 500 pounds.” The scrutiny from someone in a position of authority left deep scars, and Stafford admits those negative feelings about her body didn’t fade when she left college.

She even joked about old photos from her time on the squad. “You see the guy lifting me up, and it looks like he’s about to pass out—veins popping everywhere. I look at that now and think, maybe I wasn’t as light as I thought,” she said with a laugh, masking the painful reality of how those years shaped her perception of her body.

But the insecurities didn’t end after graduation. When Matthew was traded to the Los Angeles Rams, Kelly entered a new chapter of stress and self-denial. “I dropped so much weight that year,” she confessed. “Between the pressure of the move, the expectations around his career, and trying to adjust to a new city, I couldn’t eat or sleep. It was a really dark time for me.”

Now 36 and a mother of four, Kelly has worked hard to rebuild a healthy relationship with food and her body. These days, she proudly shares that her husband actually prefers her with what she playfully calls “a little thickness.” That affirmation, she says, helps keep her grounded in a world that often prioritizes perfection over well-being.

Her storybook romance with Matthew Stafford may seem picture-perfect today, but their beginning wasn’t quite a fairy tale. The couple met in Athens, Georgia, during their college years—he was the quarterback, and she was the cheerleader. But sparks didn’t fly immediately.

In a candid moment on the Off the Vine podcast, Kelly admitted she initially dated backup quarterback Joe Cox—not out of love, but to provoke Matthew. “I wanted to get under his skin, and it worked,” she said. “Matthew was always this polite, Southern gentleman. Joe was the exact opposite—rough around the edges, kind of a bad boy—and that contrast really got to him.”

Despite the drama, the two eventually fell for each other and tied the knot in 2015. They now share a full and busy life with their four daughters: twins Sawyer and Chandler, 8; Hunter, 6; and Tyler, 4.

While her cheerleading days are long behind her, Kelly Stafford’s reflections serve as a reminder that appearances often hide much more beneath the surface. Through vulnerability and honesty, she continues to use her platform to shine a light on mental health and self-worth—topics many women, both in and outside of sports, quietly wrestle with every day.
