D.J. Reader’s Future in Detroit Looks Uncertain

D.J. Reader, a 30-year-old defensive tackle entering his second year with the team, is now facing an uncertain future. He tallied three sacks over 15 starts last season and held down the spot that Williams now appears groomed to take over. While it’s possible that Detroit could rotate both players, parting ways with Reader would free up significant cap space.

Reader’s performance wasn’t poor by league standards—Pro Football Focus rated him 55th out of 219 interior defensive linemen. Still, with nearly $13 million due in 2025 as part of his two-year, $22 million contract, and free agency looming in 2026, the Lions might prefer to get something in return now rather than letting him walk for nothing next offseason.

The team’s run defense was average at best, finishing 19th in opponent yards per carry (4.5). Williams, known for his power and ability to disrupt running plays, could step in as an immediate upgrade. On paper, Detroit’s most effective lineup probably leans toward giving more snaps to Williams moving forward.

Although the Lions aren’t actively shopping Reader, things could change if Williams impressed coaches and decision-makers during OTAs—despite being limited by injury. As training camp approaches, Reader’s situation is quickly becoming a storyline worth monitoring.
