As the Detroit Lions prepare for what they hope will be another deep playoff run in 2025, star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson is sounding more confident than ever. After suffering a fractured tibia and fibula in Week 6 of the 2024 season, the Pro Bowl defender has not only fully recovered but insists he’s better physically and mentally than before the injury.

“I’m exactly where I need to be,” Hutchinson told CBS Sports during offseason training. “The rehab gave me time to reset, get stronger, and become even more focused. I feel like I’m in the best shape of my career heading into this year.”

Hutchinson’s return couldn’t come at a better time for Detroit. Before his injury last season, he was leading the NFL in quarterback pressures and had already recorded 7.5 sacks. His absence was felt during the second half of the season and in the playoffs, where the Lions’ defense lacked the edge that made them one of the league’s toughest units early on.

Now entering his fourth NFL season, Hutchinson is embracing a leadership role. With the team making a coaching change on defense — promoting Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator — Hutchinson says the transition has been smooth and energizing.

“Shep is a guy who brings out the best in everyone,” Hutchinson said. “He’s detailed, intense, and demands a lot, which I love. I think we’re going to take a big leap this year.”

What makes Hutchinson’s comeback especially impressive is how quickly he returned from a serious injury. Thanks to a structured rehab program that included aquatic therapy, strength work, and progressive running drills, he’s not just cleared — he’s thriving.

Detroit fans have high hopes for the 2025 season after the team posted a 15-2 record last year. With Hutchinson back at full strength, expectations are sky-high that the Lions’ defense can once again dominate and help carry the team toward a potential Super Bowl appearance.

Whether it’s his physical recovery, mindset, or leadership presence, Hutchinson’s message is clear: he’s back, he’s motivated, and he’s exactly where he needs to be — at the heart of a Lions team on a mission.
