The Detroit Lions received a welcome boost this week as defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo was officially activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, while star tight end Sam LaPorta returned to the practice field.
During Tuesday’s rainy outdoor scrimmage, LaPorta participated in full-team drills after missing a few days with a minor, undisclosed injury. Head coach Dan Campbell had initially suggested the tight end could be sidelined for a while, but his return came quicker than anticipated. Wingo, meanwhile, was eased back into action, taking part in positional work and even testing himself against double teams on the side.
The team also received encouraging news regarding Morice Norris, who remains in concussion protocol. Though he didn’t take part in drills or the scrimmage, the defensive back was seen working with trainers and later watched from the sideline in street clothes. His visible progress is a positive sign after the frightening injury he suffered in Atlanta.
Wingo later spoke with reporters about his recovery. The second-year lineman revealed that his return took longer than expected due to a cleanup procedure following the knee injury he sustained on Thanksgiving.
“Today was mostly conditioning for me. I wouldn’t call it my first full day back, but I’m just glad to finally be out here,” Wingo said. “The original plan was to be ready by training camp, but I had to get my knee cleaned up again, so that set me back a little. I’ve been grinding every day to get here.”
Wingo also leaned on teammate Alim McNeill, who tore his ACL in December, as both players battled through their rehab together. The two often watched film, discussed recovery, and motivated each other throughout the offseason. McNeill’s timeline is still uncertain, but general manager Brad Holmes suggested recently that his recovery could be ahead of schedule.
Drafted in the sixth round in 2024, Wingo admitted the road back has been long but emphasized he’s locked in on preparing for the Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
When asked if he expects to be ready for the season opener, his response was short and confident:
