lThe Detroit Lions made a series of roster moves on Tuesday as they continue to shape their roster heading into Week 3. The headline move was the promotion of offensive lineman Trystan Colon from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. In a corresponding transaction, the team placed tight end Shane Zylstra on injured reserve after he suffered an ankle injury.
Colon, who originally signed with Detroit in June, didn’t make the team out of training camp but quickly found a spot on the practice squad. Now, just two weeks into the season, the Lions are bringing him up to provide additional depth along the offensive line. Colon brings significant experience despite his relatively young age. Over the past two years, he played in 31 games with the Arizona Cardinals. Prior to that, he spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, suiting up for 20 games. His ability to play multiple spots inside gives Detroit another reliable option as they look to keep quarterback Jared Goff upright and the run game humming.
The injury to Shane Zylstra is a tough break. Zylstra, who had carved out a role on both offense and special teams, saw limited action in the opening two games, logging six snaps on offense and 13 on special teams. With his move to injured reserve, he will now miss at least four games, leaving the Lions thinner at tight end behind Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright.
Detroit also shuffled its practice squad on Tuesday. The team added wide receiver Malik Cunningham, a versatile playmaker who has experience both at quarterback and receiver, and tight end Ross Dwelley, a veteran who spent the last five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. To make room for those additions, the Lions released linebacker Monty Rice.
All told, these moves reflect Detroit’s focus on maintaining flexibility and depth across the roster as the grind of the season ramps up. Colon’s promotion ensures the offensive line remains well-fortified, while the signings of Cunningham and Dwelley add intriguing skill-position depth. Losing Zylstra hurts, but the Lions are clearly making sure they have reinforcements ready.
The front office has shown a willingness to adjust quickly, and Tuesday’s transactions are another reminder that the roster is always evolving in the NFL.
