BYU’s first March Madness game has arrived. The Cougars will play Texas on Thursday night, seeking to win a first-round tournament game for the second consecutive season under Kevin Young.
Sean Miller, the Longhorns’ coach, is widely regarded as one of the greatest in college basketball over the last two decades. After a terrible conclusion to the regular season, his team was firmly on the bubble, but they managed to earn a spot in the First Four in Dayton, Ohio, where they defeated NC State.
Miller has had an amazing coaching career, and he has connections to a number of programs that took part in the First Four. Earlier in his career, he worked as an assistant at Miami (OH) and NC State before landing his first head coaching position at Xavier.
He then made a name for himself in Arizona, where he worked for 12 seasons. Following a brief return to Xavier, he is now in his first season as Texas’ head coach.
This tournament is his 14th participation in the Big Dance as a head coach, with him reaching the Elite 8 four times.
Coach Miller Discusses Playing BYU
Following Texas’ triumph against NC State, Miller was questioned how playing two games in four days would affect his team heading into the game against BYU.
I am aware that the drive from Dayton, Ohio, to Portland is a lengthy one. I know that we leave at midnight. I understand the implications. We’re going to be in the west, so we have a long night ahead of us, he added.
He was later asked if there were any benefits to having already played a tournament game.
I believe there is value in playing a game in this competition, according to Miller. I don’t want to call it jitters, but March Madness is approaching. I believe that game one will calm our nerves. You may gain confidence. You already have one game advantage.
He added, “But we’re going to have to play a very good team, and we’re certainly going to have to play better than we did [against NC State]. ” We are aware of that. But there is a chance, which adds to the excitement.
At the afternoon press conference the next day, Miller spoke about AJ Dybantsa, complimenting the BYU standout.
He’s a fantastic player and talent. I would classify him as generational, according to Miller. AJ is a positional player—I’m not sure what term you’d use to describe him. He can do anything.
He said, I cannot express how much I appreciate him. He’s an amazing, amazing player. You can go for a long time without encountering someone like him. In the Big 12, a fantastic league, averaging 25 points per game stands out.

Kevin Young also offered his thoughts leading into the match.
When asked about his preparation, Young replied, “You can’t simply make stuff up. ” You must depend on what you accomplished throughout the season. For our squad, that season has been cut short somewhat in terms of the current version of this group that is performing.
When asked about Cougars’ recent success and how it might translate to the NCAA Tournament, Young stated, “The things they’ve truly embraced are what enable you to win in the postseason: defense, rebounding, and playing together offensively. “
He added, This is where this team has found success, and these are the things we want to bring into the competition.
