Christian Kirk agreed to a one-year, $6 million contract with the 49ers last month. This week, the eight-year veteran revealed how the choice was made on the “In Good Company with Mitch Morse” podcast.
It did not take long for the solution to become obvious.
What Kirk Said About Picking the 49ers
Kirk was forthright about his intentions heading into free agency this summer. After working with the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans, he was able to be picky.
“Free agency was a little different this year,” Kirk said. “I felt like I was in a position to be a little bit more selective about where I wanted to go. At this stage in my career, I feel everything depended on being in the correct circumstances. ”
San Francisco fulfilled all of the conditions. Kirk spent four years in the NFC West with Arizona, observing what Kyle Shanahan had developed from the other sideline. The respect was present prior to any conversation.
“Shanahan has had that thing rolling for a while,” Kirk remarked. “All of those players, Purdy, McCaffrey, Kittle, Fred Warner, Trent Williams. ” Played against all of those guys. I have a lot of regard for that organization. “

What Excites Kirk About Shanahan’s Offense
Beyond the roster, Kirk was also delighted about what Shanahan’s system could do for him personally. After a career-low 239 receiving yards with the Texans in 2025, he is eager to rebound in a big way.
He thinks the approach provides him with every possibility to do so.
“There’s simply so much room when guys get the ball in their hands,” Kirk stated. “The manner in which he can open up different players by using play-action passes, run game, screens, the complete nine. It’s all about integrating yourself into it, and he does an excellent job of utilizing people’s talents. “
Kirk will join Mike Evans, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey in an attack led by Brock Purdy. The weapons around him are real. Personal motivation to perform well following a bad year is strong.

San Francisco’s receiving corps looks dramatically different from the previous year. Kendrick Bourne has moved to the Arizona Cardinals. Jauan Jennings is no longer a member of the squad. The Brandon Aiyuk issue remains unresolved.
Kirk and Evans add seasoned leadership to a team in need of it. Kirk is originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, and he said that moving back to the West Coast influenced his decision. He comes motivated, familiar with the division, and understands his position.
Despite a long injury list, the 49ers finished last season with a 12-5 record and advanced to the Divisional Round. With the receiver group improved and important players returning healthy, the objective is to go farther in 2026.
