Tennessee has agreed to keep men’s basketball head coach Rick Barnes for the rest of his coaching career, at least on paper. The institution confirmed on Thursday that Barnes has agreed to a lifetime deal to coach the Volunteers for the foreseeable future.

In a statement, athletic director Danny White said that Barnes had achieved top-level success for Tennessee’s program.

Rick has driven our program to extraordinary heights, and we are overjoyed that he will continue to lead on Rocky Top for the rest of his career, according to White.

Barnes remarked in the statement that it is an honor and a blessing to serve as the Volunteers’ head coach.

On Thursday’s edition of The Mike Keith Show, White went into greater depth about his admiration for Barnes, revealing the lifetime deal to Keith, the voice of Tennessee football and basketball.

He does a tremendous job of recruiting high-character, young men into our program who go on to be exceptional ambassadors for our university and culture, according to White. We would like him to lead our program for as long as he wishes to coach.

Barnes has quickly established himself as one of the most successful coaches in program history after joining the team in 2015. Barnes has led Tennessee to seven NCAA tournament berths in ten seasons with the club (including back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in the last two years), two SEC regular-season titles (2018, 2024), and an SEC tournament title (2022).

Prior to Barnes’ arrival, the Volunteers had only one other Elite Eight performance and five Sweet Sixteen appearances in 50 years. They have now advanced to the Sweet 16 or higher four times in the last ten years (excluding 2020, which was canceled due to COVID-19). Tennessee had won the SEC four times in the 40 years prior to Barnes’ appointment, and the program has now won three additional league titles.

Barnes, 71, has guided the Vols to a 232-109 record in his ten seasons.

Barnes has been coaching college basketball for five decades, beginning as an assistant at Davidson in 1978. Before becoming the Volunteers’ coach, Barnes worked as Texas’ head coach for 17 seasons. His total head coaching record is 836-421.
