“The Vikings had the easiest schedule to start the season. From here on, they’ve got the hardest in the entire NFL,” Heifetz said. “McCarthy’s coming back into a storm. He’s not ready for this level yet, and Minnesota’s built to win right now.”
Heifetz didn’t stop there—he projected that McCarthy’s struggles could extend beyond this season.
“The timelines don’t match. He’s going to struggle, and if that happens, the offseason questions will be brutal,” Heifetz added. “Do the Vikings stick with McCarthy? They’ve already moved on from Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold. McCarthy has more pressure on him than any other young quarterback heading into next year.”
Despite the grim outlook, McCarthy has a major opportunity to silence critics with a standout performance against the Lions. A win over Detroit wouldn’t just boost the Vikings’ season—it could mark a turning point in McCarthy’s young career.
While the former Michigan Wolverines star undeniably has the tools to become a franchise cornerstone, he still needs refinement and consistency. His Week 9 performance could offer the first real glimpse of whether he’s capable of meeting the lofty expectations set for him in Minnesota.
