The Chicago Bears entered their Week 18 matchup with Detroit riding a wave of confidence, but that energy disappeared quickly after a narrow 19–16 defeat to the Lions.
Chicago’s offense was the main culprit in the loss, failing to find consistency throughout the game.
Quarterback Caleb Williams finished 20-of-33 for 212 yards, throwing two touchdowns but also one costly interception. The running game provided little help, as the Bears managed just 65 rushing yards on 18 attempts.
Following the game, head coach Ben Johnson didn’t hide his disappointment. His postgame comments made it clear he was unhappy with how the offense performed, calling out the unit for falling short when it mattered most.
A Familiar Offensive Breakdown Against Detroit
Many of the same problems that plagued Chicago earlier in the season resurfaced once again. Just like the lopsided Week 2 loss to Detroit, the Bears struggled to establish balance. Williams showed flashes but lacked consistency, and the ground game never found its rhythm.
Injuries also played a role. The absence of Rome Odunze and Ozzy Trapilo was noticeable, particularly with several dropped passes by the receiving group.
Theo Benedet stepping in for Trapilo created additional challenges, as his strengths aren’t suited for heavy pass-blocking duties. That mismatch made life more difficult for the offense as a whole.
Questionable usage of personnel also raised eyebrows. Rookie tight end Colston Loveland accounted for seven of the team’s first 11 targets, while second-round pick Luther Burden III wasn’t even involved in the passing game until after halftime.
Johnson’s frustration mirrored what many Bears fans were feeling while watching the game unfold.
With a Wild Card matchup against the Green Bay Packers looming, Chicago has little time to dwell on the disappointment. Fixing the offense quickly will be essential if the Bears hope to extend their season.
