The Detroit Lions have finally addressed their thinning cornerback depth, adding veteran defensive back Arthur Maulet to the practice squad. The signing, first reported by NFL Network insider Cameron Wolfe, comes shortly after encouraging news regarding rookie corner Terrion Arnold, whose shoulder injury will not require surgery. Team doctors expect Arnold to return to action in roughly a month.

Maulet entered the NFL in 2017 as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints. Over eight seasons, he has suited up for 84 career games, spending most of his time with AFC teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, and New York Jets. While he’s bounced around various rosters, his experience and physical playstyle make him a valuable addition for a Lions defense in need of reinforcements.

The update on Arnold’s health was a significant sigh of relief for Detroit, as initial fears suggested the promising rookie might miss the remainder of the season after being injured in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Although his recovery will take time, the Lions are fortunate that his absence will be temporary—especially with a bye week on the horizon to aid his return.

Maulet Brings Veteran Depth to Detroit’s Cornerback Unit

Maulet may be elevated from the practice squad as soon as this week when the Lions face the Kansas City Chiefs. However, Detroit still has several capable options in its defensive backfield. Rock Ya-Sin has impressed since the preseason, while Avonte Maddox and Amik Robertson remain available should the team need them.

The Lions could also turn to Nick Whiteside, another preseason standout currently on the practice squad. With Khalil Dorsey nursing an injury, Detroit might activate both Maulet and Whiteside ahead of their Week 6 matchup.

According to Pride of Detroit’s Al Karsten, Maulet’s physicality and aggressive coverage style could prove useful against Kansas City’s dynamic passing attack on Sunday Night Football. Although it’s nearly impossible to replicate Arnold’s skill set, adding a tough, experienced corner like Maulet provides much-needed stability and depth for the Lions’ secondary.
