The Wisconsin men’s basketball team acted promptly, before the official opening of the transfer period, to secure its next recruit.

Coach Greg Gard and his staff opted for an international recruitment approach to add another commitment to their 2026 class. This particular addition brings a professional background that is quite distinct from that of a typical first-year university athlete.

Owen Foxwell, a point guard from the Melbourne Phoenix, has pledged to Wisconsin, having previously been committed to LSU. This information was reported by 247Sports’ Travis Branham, referencing Foxwell’s agency, ProMondo Sports.

The 22-year-old point guard joins the team in Madison boasting five years of professional play in Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL). This provides an uncommon level of seasoned experience and on-court performance for an incoming first-year player. His track record offers tangible evidence of his abilities, rather than just future potential, with his development and performance against professional competitors being well-documented.

During his most recent season, Foxwell maintained averages of 11.1 points, 4.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, while serving as a full-time starter for the South East Melbourne Phoenix. The 6-foot-2 guard played 24.4 minutes per contest, achieving shooting percentages of 41.1% from the field, 35.2% from beyond the arc, and 80% from the free-throw line. He demonstrated efficient ball handling, limiting turnovers to approximately 1.5 per game, resulting in an assist-to-turnover ratio of 125-to-43 over 28 contests.

These statistics provide significant insight into his capabilities even without visual review. My assessment indicates he possesses exceptional quickness, astuteness, strong court awareness, and a natural ability to direct an offense. He utilizes a floater shot when driving to the basket, effectively creates separation for three-point attempts using a step-back move, and projects as a capable shooter with potential for further development within the Wisconsin program.

On the defensive end, his quick footwork enables him to guard opponents effectively. However, given his stature, he occasionally over-relies on reaching for steals. In the competitive Big Ten conference, his ability to consistently navigate screens will be crucial, as missed assignments in this area can compromise team defense.

There is also a pre-existing connection, as Foxwell previously played alongside current Wisconsin Badgers forward Austin Rapp when they were both members of the South East Melbourne Phoenix in the NBL.

The skilled player Wisconsin is acquiring is the result of gradual development. His playing ability has consistently progressed throughout his professional career.

Foxwell initially joined the Melbourne Phoenix as an 18-year-old development squad member and progressively earned a starting point guard position by the 2025-26 season. Along the way, the left-handed guard accumulated over 100 professional league appearances, also played in New Zealand’s NBL, where he topped the league in assists with an average of 8.0 per contest. Furthermore, he made his debut for the Australian national team, the Boomers, at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup – a considerable achievement.

Consequently, while Wisconsin brings him in as part of its 2026 class and he may officially be designated as a freshman, his experience level is distinct from the typical first-year player. He joins a 2026 recruiting class that is developing a distinctive character. Wisconsin has already secured commitments from New Zealand guard Jackson Ball and local forward LaTrevion Fenderson, creating a roster blend of international flair and domestic talent, consistent with the coaching staff’s recruitment objectives.
