The Detroit Lions opened their preparation for Sunday’s matchup against the Cleveland Browns with some notable names absent from the injury report. Among them was defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad, who is fresh off a standout performance in the team’s Monday Night Football win over the Baltimore Ravens. Despite his momentum, Muhammad’s availability for Week 4 is suddenly in question.
The Lions held only a walkthrough session on Wednesday, meaning the injury report was based on estimates rather than a full-speed practice. Still, Muhammad was officially listed as a non-participant, raising mild concern for Detroit’s defensive front. Muhammad has been a key piece in the Lions’ pass-rushing rotation, and his energy and pressure against Baltimore helped spark a statement win for Dan Campbell’s squad. Losing him, even temporarily, would be a setback for a unit that’s already had to deal with injuries early in the season.
Muhammad wasn’t the only Lion sidelined. Veteran left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder), safety Daniel Thomas (forearm), and rookie running back Sione Vaki (groin) were also listed as out of practice. Decker’s situation, in particular, bears watching as he anchors the offensive line that has played a huge role in keeping quarterback Jared Goff upright. If his shoulder issue lingers, it could test Detroit’s depth up front against a Browns defense known for its relentless pressure.
The report also included linebacker Derrick Barnes, who was limited with a knee injury. Barnes has been carving out an increasingly important role in Aaron Glenn’s defense, and his ability to play through the week will be crucial against Cleveland’s physical rushing attack. On a more positive note, cornerback DJ Reed, who left Monday night’s game briefly due to cramping, was listed as a full participant, signaling no long-term concerns.
At this stage of the season, injuries are becoming a balancing act for every NFL team. For the Lions, the hope is that Muhammad and the others can progress throughout the week and be ready by Sunday. Detroit’s defense is coming off a dominant showing, recording seven sacks on Lamar Jackson, and maintaining that momentum against the Browns will likely depend on having as many playmakers healthy as possible.
While Wednesday’s report was only an estimation, it serves as an early reminder that health will be just as important as game planning in what’s shaping up to be another physical test for the Lions.
