The Ohio State football program has seen significant staff changes in recent years. Several changes to the offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach have prompted Ryan Day to make a number of appointments in recent years.
Day nailed the Matt Patricia appointment. They were able to sign him to an extension a few weeks ago, but the length of the deal is still unclear. Day recruited Cortez Hankton as the wide receivers coach to take over Brian Hartline’s position.
Arthur Smith has been hired as the new offensive coordinator, taking over Hartline’s other responsibilities. He will be the new play-caller. The Ohio State Buckeyes have elected to hire another assistant coach who has previously worked with Smith and is someone he respects.
Ohio State football squad has named Mateo Kambui as offensive line assistant coach.
According to Letterman Row’s Spencer Holbrook, Day has hired Mateo Kambu as an assistant offensive line coach. Kambui has worked as Smith’s assistant coach for the previous three seasons. He has accompanied him in both Atlanta and Pittsburgh, and will now join him in Columbus.
The Buckeyes feature many offensive line assistant coaches and analysts who assist Tyler Bowen in getting the guys in the trenches to perform at their best. The offensive line was most likely the primary factor for Ohio State’s defeat in the last two games of the season. They simply didn’t block effectively enough.
The best time to add Kambui is just before spring practice. Having him available for the whole spring program makes it so. He doesn’t have to play catch-up. He also understands what Smith enjoys to do on offense, so he can help Bowen modify the offensive line’s strategy to best suit his scheme.
The Buckeyes’ spring training begins in just under two weeks.
