The BYU football program is coming to the conclusion of spring practice. One of the most pressing concerns entering camp was the wide receiver room. The Cougars will have to replace their top two wide receivers from last season, Parker Kingston and Chase Roberts.

On Friday, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick stated trust in the BYU pass-catchers. He praised redshirt junior wide receiver Jojo Phillips as a player who has made significant progress.

According to Roderick, he has been pleased with the progress of the wide receivers. Jojo Phillips has made considerable progress. You know, the injury he suffered last year was quite serious. We don’t speak much about details and things, but it was a severe injury that shook his confidence and took some time to recover.

Phillips sustained an injury in week two against Stanford. That ailment sidelined him for two full months before he returned to the starting lineup against Texas Tech. When he returned from injury, he was targeted 12 times and had 7 receptions. He also had three drops, with some falling at crucial times. It was evident that he was still rusty after being out for two months.

Phillips then had two weeks to prepare for the bowl game. He resembled the image of himself that he presented during Fall Camp. He had a season-high four catches for 53 yards.

And then the bowl game was like, okay, that’s Jojo that we’ve been anticipating, and I’ve noticed him improve even more this spring, according to Roderick.

Phillips is likely the leading candidate to be BYU’s go-to wide receiver in 2026. He has grown into his long frame, and his coaches claim that he has become the room’s leader.

We’ll have enough weapons.

Roderick emphasized BYU’s other pass-catchers as well. The two transfer tight ends, Roger Saleapaga and Walker Lyons, will play key roles in the passing attack.

Kyler Kasper has had a fantastic spring, according to Roderick. He’s everything I anticipated him to be up to this point, and he’ll play a crucial role in our attack. I observe Tei [Nacua] growing every day. You know, I see Reggie Frischknecht out there getting better. I’m going to forget someone there, but there are definitely enough people there. And then, when you consider the fact that we have some tight ends who are capable receivers, we will have plenty of options.

BYU will finish Spring Camp next week.
