Detroit Lions guard Christian Mahogany could be in danger of losing his starting role as head coach Dan Campbell signals an open competition at left guard ahead of training camp.
During mandatory minicamp, Campbell described the left guard position as an “open competition,” according to reports, highlighting a highly competitive battle heading into the 2026 NFL season. The Lions also added veteran Ben Bartch, further intensifying the fight for the starting spot.
Campbell reportedly listed multiple contenders for the role, including Mahogany, Bartch, Miles Frazier, and even Giovanni Manu, signaling no guaranteed starter at the position.
Lions Left Guard Battle Heating Up Ahead of Training Camp
The development comes as a surprise given Mahogany’s expected role as the clear starter entering his third NFL season. He held the job for much of the previous year before suffering a broken bone in Week 9 against the Minnesota Vikings.
Before his injury, Mahogany was viewed as a solid presence on the offensive line. However, upon returning in Week 16, both he and the Lions’ offensive line struggled as the season came to a difficult finish.
Other linemen such as Kayode Awosika, Trystan Colon, and Miles Frazier saw action in his absence, with mixed results across the board. Despite this, advanced metrics reportedly suggested Mahogany remained one of the more effective options at left guard.
Dan Campbell’s Offensive Line Shuffle Raises Questions
Rather than prioritizing continuity, Campbell appears determined to spark competition across the offensive line. The decision to include multiple candidates at left guard reflects uncertainty about the group heading into camp.
The mention of Giovanni Manu as a potential option has raised eyebrows, while Frazier’s limited late-season performances and Bartch’s veteran experience add further intrigue. The absence of Juice Scruggs from Campbell’s list also suggests possible reshuffling of roles, potentially focusing him more at center depth.
Lions Offensive Line Undergoing Major Changes for 2026 Season
The Lions’ offensive line could look significantly different in 2026. Tate Ratledge appears to be the only returning full-time starter locked into his position, while Penei Sewell has reportedly shifted to left tackle to accommodate rookie Blake Miller at right tackle. Free-agent addition Cade Mays is expected to take over at center.
With so many changes up front, training camp and preseason will be critical for establishing chemistry and identifying the best starting five.
For Mahogany, the upcoming months represent a crucial opportunity to secure his job and prove he still belongs in the starting lineup as competition intensifies in Detroit.
