Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard insisted that his team deserved a second-half penalty in their 0-0 tie with Sheffield Wednesday at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday afternoon.
On what was a disappointing afternoon from a Sky Blues standpoint, they felt they should have been granted a penalty in the second half after a cross from the right seemed to hit Tayo Adaramola on the arm.
The Sky Blues entered the game knowing that a win would place them on the verge of promotion and pressed hard in the second half in search of an early goal, but the Owls were a tough and resilient team to face.
The Owls defended valiantly in the East Midlands, heading and kicking away all of their hosts’ attempts to score. However, Lampard believed that his team should have been given the opportunity to break the tie from the penalty spot.
“It’s a penalty,” Lampard maintained. “It’s a penalty, as it was at Hull, as it was against Derby, which has now been confirmed. “
“The three games and three penalty decisions against, to add to the list. “
Lampard, who is hoping his team will earn promotion to the Premier League when they face Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park next Friday night, need just three more points from their final four games to secure the deal. He felt his side did enough to win the game, but he praised Wednesday for defending so well.
“We certainly generated enough to win the game, but we fell short,” he remarked. “You have to credit the opposition for making life hard for you.
“But when a team has nothing to gain as such, they have nothing to lose. I believe they have a really motivated manager who is attempting to, you know, perform his job to the best of his ability.
“So they were always going to make it as difficult as possible for us, and, regrettably, we were unable to get a breakthrough, despite having possession, crosses, and opportunities. “
