Detroit Lions defensive tackle D.J. Reader isn’t certain what lies ahead in his career, but if he had his way, he’d remain in Honolulu blue.
“I’d love to stay here—love the guys, love the coaches—so we’ll see,” Reader told the Detroit Free Press. “Free agency is unpredictable… but I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”
There’s a genuine sincerity in his words.
Over the last two seasons with the Lions, Reader has been more than just a presence on the defensive line. He’s been a leader, mentor, and steady influence in a room full of younger players. Even if his stats don’t grab headlines, his impact has been consistent and respected.
Consistency That Doesn’t Always Show Up in Stats
In 2025, Reader played 554 defensive snaps (ranking 39th among interior defensive linemen) and earned a 69.4 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, placing him 31st among 128 qualifying defensive tackles. That puts him squarely in the “reliable veteran” category that coaches trust in critical situations.
He acknowledges he isn’t the kind of player whose numbers jump off the page, but he trusts the film shows his value.
“Stats don’t always tell the whole story, but I feel like I’ve played some solid football,” Reader said. “Others may see it differently, but I’ve enjoyed it.”
Leadership Both On and Off the Field
Reader described his time in Detroit as meaningful both personally and professionally.
He recorded a career-high three sacks in 2024 and took younger defensive linemen under his wing, joking that he’s “gained some little brothers for life.”
Off the field, he earned the Lions’ nomination for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, highlighting his character and contributions beyond football.
“I’ve really enjoyed being in a new city, meeting new people, and the work environment here has been great,” he added.
Will the Lions Re-Sign Him?
The big question now is whether Detroit brings Reader back. He’s clear about his desire to stay, but also recognizes the team has other financial priorities.
“They’ve got other things to take care of… so we’ll see how it all shakes out,” he said.
With roster decisions looming on the defensive line, factors like age and wear will be weighed alongside experience, leadership, and scheme familiarity. But based on how his teammates speak about him, it seems likely that the Lions value what Reader brings both on and off the field.
