Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, an American who won gold in the women’s 400-meter hurdles at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, broke the previous record in this event.
In Eugene, Oregon, on June 30, 2024, McLaughlin-Levrone set her own World Record, which she broke when she crossed the finish line in 50.37 seconds to win her second Olympic medal.
Femke Bol of the Netherlands won bronze in 52.15 seconds, while Anna Cockrell of the USA set a new personal best by winning silver in 51.87 seconds.
As the first track athlete to break four world records in a single event, McLaughlin-Levrone broke the 52- and 51-second barriers in the 400-meter hurdles in June 2021 and July 2022, respectively. She accomplished this feat in just 13 months.
At the World Championships in 2019, she took home the silver medal. She won gold in all three contests while competing in the women’s 4 × 400 m relay.

McLaughlin-Levrone won the title of 2015 World Youth Champion at the age of fifteen. She qualified for the U.S. Olympic track squad in 2016 as the youngest athlete to do so since Denean Howard in 1980.
She did so by placing third at the U.S. Olympic Trials, setting the world U20 record and setting the current world under-18 best time of 54.15 seconds.
