On Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys resumed their season. Even though it was just preseason, watching the Cowboys play in a real game had a very reassuring quality. Not surprisingly, given that Mike McCarthy rested the most of his starters and used a strong rotation of second-stringers and roster-bubble players, the on-field performance was subpar.

The main lesson for Cowboys supporters is that Trey Lance’s performance left them all completely stunned. McCarthy was not impressed with Lance either. Lance was not the only player to take the field, but he still has two more games to demonstrate his abilities as the former No. 3 overall choice.

Two of the greatest players on the field were rookies Tyler Guyton and Marshawn Kneeland, first- and second-round selections. Guyton and Kneeland, nevertheless, are both firmly committed to their roles. Given Chuma Edoga’s absence, Guyton is expected to start at left tackle, with Kneeland seeing plenty of action as the primary backup DE behind Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.

Some major position battles will be decided in the final two preseason games, but McCarthy might have unintentionally given away the outcome of a major one on SundaJalen Tolbert will be the Cowboys’ third wide receiver, as Mike McCarthy quietly disclosed.

One of the most entertaining narratives to follow during training camp was the WR3 struggle. However, given that he did not suit up on Sunday, it is obvious that Jalen Tolbert has taken the position. If Tolbert had played one or two drives, that would have been one thing.
