Just one man, big-legged kicker Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens, has connected on a field goal attempt of 66 yards or longer in the more than a century-long history of professional football. However, Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey appears to be the guy who makes attempts from this distance a regular occurrence.
Despite his unusual introduction to the game, former professional soccer player and USFL standout Brandon Aubrey was named to the first team of the NFL last year during his rookie season with the Cowboys. Aubrey made 36 of 38 field goals, including a flawless 10-for-10 from 50 yards out.
The 29-year-old Cowboys kicker is known for his long-range ability. In December, Aubrey made wild speculations that he could score from 70 yards or more. Although he has not had the opportunity to attempt a field goal from 70 yards or more, Aubrey did get the chance to step out on the field to try a 66-yarder on the last play of the half in Saturday’s preseason game against the Raiders.
After the game, Aubrey spoke about the kick that would’ve tied Justin Tucker’s record-setting 66-yard game winner if preseason stats counted toward NFL records.
“Just kind of feels like nothing’s quite there,” Aubrey said after the game, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. “Got a little bounce off of your foot, that it sticks onto your foot for like a fraction of a second and then it goes. It kind of shoots off, jumps off your foot. And you know right off the bat it was a good, clean hit.
Aubrey’s 65-yard try against the Rams last week did not seem to be a good, clean hit. The ball was a touch short and pushed wide. Aubrey made the most of his opportunity for atonement in Vegas, which came just one week later.
