The longest field goal record in the NFL was tied by the Cowboys kicker, and it might not be the end of him.

With an incredible 66-yard field goal on Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium, Brandon Aubrey shocked everyone. Even though the performance was incredible, the Dallas Cowboys chanter made it appear simple, and specialists think it could have been even more impressive.

Throughout the entire game, the Cowboys outplayed the Raiders, with Aubrey having a major impact. The visitors looked to extend their lead going into the half, leading 10–6 at the half. That’s when Aubrey was sent onto the field by head coach Mike McCarthy.

In the dying moments of the first half, Aubrey stepped up, transformed his leg like a cannon, and drove a “bullet” between the uprights with little left on the line. The field goal was equal to Justin Tucker’s NFL record of 66 yards, which was set in 2022 by the Baltimore Ravens against the Detroit Lions. Aubrey’s strike had space, but Tucker’s was dramatic, rebounding off the crossbar and then crossing through. NextGen Stats indicates that the kick might have traveled 72 yards!

The record that won’t count

Sadly, Aubrey’s remarkable score will only be remembered in history. Because it was a preseason game, the 66-yard field goal will not be officially recorded in the NFL record books, meaning that Tucker will continue to retain the record by himself. For the time being, however. McCarthy is not going to want his offensive to be dependent on Aubrey’s leg. In addition, it doesn’t seem likely that the Cowboys coach would want to take this kind of risk during the regular season unless there was really no other option.

A unique journey

Both Aubrey’s talent and his ascent to NFL fame are unique. He began his playing career as a defender in soccer rather than football. Eventually, he was able to play in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he was a member of the MLS Next Pro league for both Toronto FC and Bethlehem Steel FC. Aubrey has mentioned in multiple interviews that when he was watching a football game and the kicker missed a field goal, his wife remarked, “You could do that.”She was right, boy. The former star player from Notre Dame had a fantastic debut season in 2023 with the Cowboys, setting an NFL record with his first 35 field goals made and completing the season with 36 of 38 attempts.

Given how vital he has grown to be to McCarthy’s team and how young his career is, it’s very likely that Aubrey will get at least one more opportunity to make an NFL impact.
