The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired Russell Wilson and Justin Fields as quarterbacks, but neither is considered the long-term answer.

The team’s quarterbacks fall somewhere between average and bad, leaving the quarterback question open for another offseason.

Could the Steelers go big-game fishing in 2025?

Assuming Pittsburgh does not have a high enough pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to choose a franchise quarterback, free agency could be the solution.

The Steelers currently have more than $80 million in cap space for the upcoming season, according to Over the Cap. Mike Florio suggests negotiating a lower price for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

“Would they pay Dak’s market value? Here’s the deal about free agency. Florio noted that Dak may opt to join a team and hire a coach for less than market value.

“After having Jerry Jones try to persuade him for years to take less than he could get elsewhere, Dak could stick it to the Cowboys by choosing to take less from one of their biggest AFC rivals.”

Don’t get too excited.

For starters, Dallas must allow Prescott to leave the building so that he may become a free agency. Even with the glacial pace of discussions, it’s difficult to think that any team would let its top quarterback depart for fun and games.

If Prescott does enter the market, pettiness is unlikely to be at the forefront of his thoughts. It would be a departure from his near-perfect record off the field as a Cowboy. He’s spoken the right things, made the correct remarks, and represented America’s Team admirably.

We doubt he will let spite stand in the way of maximizing his riches from star-level play. Prescott is expected to sign a contract around $55-60 million per year on average.

There is a world where Pittsburgh can provide that. However, if they are unwilling to put up market-setting sums (or possibly more in a free agency frenzy), their aspirations for a franchise quarterback will be dashed. Prescott is unlikely to visit Western Pennsylvania.
