Although the Cowboys’ roster is essentially set for the 2024 campaign, there are undoubtedly some obvious weak points. Despite the return of receiver CeeDee Lamb following his holdout from training camp, the team still lacks depth at the pass-catching position.

The lead is Lamb. In second place is Brandin Cooks. It is hoped that Jalen Tolbert, who was selected by the Cowboys in the third round in 2022, can eventually realize the talent he has occasionally displayed. The receiving group is completed by Jalen Brooks, Ryan Flournoy, a rookie, and KaVontae Turpin, a regular on special teams.

After Lamb, who last season set franchise records for receptions (135) and yardage (1,749), it is not a very good group. The lack of depth on this team may become apparent sooner rather than later, since Lamb will likely require a few weeks to settle into a regular NFL rhythm.

In light of this, the people behind the SB Nation website Blogging the Boys have put out an intriguing suggestion for the Cowboys to think about: Corey Davis, a former receiver for the Titans and Jets who momentarily retired but is attempting to return to the league, was signed as the previous No. 5 overall pick.

Corey Davis was selected fifth overall in 2017.

The six-three Although he was never able to fully develop in the NFL, Davis certainly possess skill. In six seasons, he caught 273 balls for 3,879 yards. After four years, he left Tennessee to sign a three-year, $37 million contract with the Jets. However, he only participated in two of those seasons before quitting in 2023.

Along with defensive tackle Siaka Ika and cornerback Caleb Farley, BTB writer Brian Martin lists Davis as one of the three free agents the Dallas Cowboys should think about signing.

Since the Tennessee Titans selected Corey Davis fifth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, his career has had ups and downs. During his four seasons in Tennessee and his two seasons with the Jets in New York, he played in a run-heavy system and, regrettably, never reached the 1000-yard receiving mark in his career. He might still be a good depth player, though.

Davis, who was recently reinstated after a temporary retirement and missing the whole 2023 season, might improve Dallas’ wide receiver depth in 2024. He would be Dak Prescott’s next main target outside at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, and he might be able to help with redzone problems.

PFF Ranks Cowboys Wide Receivers No. 15

Although the Cowboys will not be taking any action along these lines in the near future, Davis is someone to watch. Once you pass Lamb and Cooks, the Cowboys are thin on experience at the position. Dallas has two rookies on the practice squad: Jalen Cropper and second-year player Kelvin Harmon.

Aside from Lamb and Cooks, Harmon was the most productive career wide receiver on the Cowboys roster and practice squad with 30 receptions for the Commanders in the previous campaign. Turpin has 13 career catches, Tolbert has 24, and Brooks has 6.

The Cowboys’ receiving group was ranked 15th in the NFL by Pro Football Focus during the offseason, but it was made plain that Lamb was the main reason why the unit is high ranking:

Given that CeeDee Lamb is essentially the only player on the list, how highly do the Cowboys deserve to rank? With a 91.4 receiving grade, Lamb was third in the NFL in the previous season. In addition to having the most first-down catches, he led the league in targets, was tied for third in receiving touchdowns, and ranked second in receiving yards. He could not be stopped.

“Brandin Cooks just had his lowest receiving grade (70.1) since his rookie campaign; however, at this point, that is just speculation.”
